James Webb Space Telescope Alignment Completion Explained
The James Webb Space Telescope might seem like something that you just started to hear about, but in fact, work began on the project over thirty years ago at the Space Telescope Science Institute, or STScI, with a challenge from the Director of the institute, Riccardo Giacconi asking them to ‘think about the next major mission beyond [The Hubble Space Telescope].’ Towards the end of 1989, a workshop held at STScI before the launch of Hubble led to this development. The goal was simply, ‘what next?’
Alignment is now completed on the project, as the James Webb Space Telescope finished its alignment phase, proving that it can absolutely capture “crisp, well-focused images” with all four of its science instruments. Now, images of a very “boring” star have been sending shockwaves through the world of astronomy, as they are the first that have been sent back from Webb, and they have dramatically exceeded the hopes and expectations of the scientific community, including the team responsible for it.
